Orthopaedic Surgery Elective

Pre-requisites: Third year surgery clerkship

Objectives:

  • To give the student clinical and surgical experience in various orthopaedic areas such as sports medicine, total joint, spine, hand, trauma, general orthopaedics, and foot and ankle.
  • To acquaint the student with the surgical techniques used in orthopaedic surgery.
  • To instruct the student in the basic information required in a musculoskeletal examination.
  • To expose the student to pertinent knowledge in the care of patients on the orthopaedic service.
  • To provide the student with the opportunity, under supervision, to evaluate new and established patients in physician offices and in prison setting.
  • To familiarize the student with both non-operative and operative care of fractures.

Mechanisms for Meeting Objectives:

Clinical: The student will choose up to four subspecialty areas in which he/she would like to work. Each will be assigned to an attending in each chosen subspecialty area for one week at a time. The student will follow the attendings’ schedule for the week in both the clinic and the operating room. Time will be spent seeing certain inpatients, when appropriate, to see the continuity of care for specific conditions. A log of activities will be kept by the student. This logbook must be signed by the attending or their secretary at the completion of each week. The signed logbook must be turned in to the Program Coordinator by the last Friday of the rotation.

Didactic: The student will attend Fracture Conference, X-ray Conference, and Grand Rounds. Other conference attendance is optional. The student has required reading. Textbooks will be loaned to the student at the beginning of the rotation.

Evaluation Criteria:

Clinical evaluations by house staff and attendings will comprise 75% of the final grade. A written test will be administered by the clerkship director on the last day of the rotation. This test will comprise 25% of the final grade. Students must turn in their logbooks, textbooks, and evaluations of faculty to the Program Coordinator (N1050 Doan) in order to receive a final grade.
