Orthopaedic Surgery Sub-Internship (DOC5) at Mt. Carmel Health System

Pre-requisites: Surgery and Medicine Clerkships

Objectives:

  • To give the student clinical experience in orthopaedic surgery at the level of an acting intern
  • To have the student acquire knowledge pertinent to the care of patients on the orthopaedic surgery service.
  • To have the student acquire some of the technical skills involved in the care of Orthopaedic surgery patients.
  • To have the student learn professional attitudes appropriate to the care of orthopaedic surgery patients. 

Mechanisms for Meeting Objectives:

Clinical: The student will participate in daily rounds with residents and attendings. The student will also be present in the attendings' clinics and operating rooms. The student will be an active participant in the operative procedures related to orthopaedic surgery. The student will be expected to take four in-house calls during the month.

Didactic: The student will attend those conferences which take place at Mt. Carmel Hospital. These conferences include a weekly Fracture Conference and weekly Anatomy conference. The student will also attend program-wide Grand Rounds on a weekly basis. The student has required reading.

Evaluation Criteria:

Students will be evaluated by orthopaedic housestaff at Mt. Carmel. The standard COMPH evaluation form will be used. Students must complete on-line evaluations of the rotation and attendings in order to receive a final grade. Students must also return their parking passes in order to receive a final grade.
