Objectives:

  • To provide the student with a serious interest in orthopaedic surgery with the knowledge pertinent to the care of patients on the orthopaedic trauma service.
  • To participate in the management of emergent orthopaedic injuries at a busy Level I trauma center.
  • To provide the student with an overall understanding of orthopaedic injuries to the multiply-injured patient, including spine, long bone, acetabular, and pelvic fractures.
  • To provide the student with an understanding of the priorities and objectives relative to the overall orthopaedic care of patients as well as the management of DVT, prophylaxis, wound care, physical therapy, etc.
  • To have the student acquire some of the technical skills involved in the care of orthopaedic trauma patients.
  • To have the student learn professional attitudes appropriate to the care of orthopaedic trauma patients.

Mechanisms for Meeting Objectives:

Clinical: The rotation will take place in the offices and operating rooms of various orthopaedic trauma surgeons, each of whom are based at Grant Hospital. The student will follow the attendings’ schedules in both the clinic and operating room. The student will work closely with the orthopaedic residents and trauma fellows in evaluating and treating patients in the emergency room setting. The student will also participate in the clinical care of patients and observe faculty as mentors in the action of the doctor-patient relationship. The student will also be expected to take four days of in-house call. A log of activities will be kept by the student, this log book must signed by the attendings with whom the student worked during the month. The signed log book must be turned in to the Program Coordinator by the last Friday of the rotation.

Didactic: The student will attend all scheduled educational activities for the trauma service at Grant. The student will also attend OSU Friday morning teaching sessions (i.e. Grand Rounds, Teaching Conference, Fracture Conference). Other conference attendance is optional. The student has required reading. Textbooks will be loaned to students at the beginning of the rotation.

Evaluation Criteria:

Clinical evaluations by house staff and attending is 75% of grade. Written test is 25% of grade. Clinical evaluations by house staff and attendings. Students must turn in log books, textbooks, and evaluations of faculty to the Program Coordinator (N1050 Doan Hall) in order to receive final grade.
