Curriculum Vitae

Experience & Interests:

Leadership, Administration and Medical Education – My interest in leadership, administration and education is reflected in my roles as departmental Chairman and Chief Physician Executive. The Division of Orthopaedic Surgery became the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation at UTMB under my stewardship. Faculty had increased from six to 19, patient revenue and clinical volume tripled, resident and fellowship performance, research publications increased with a positive budget. From 1994 to 2001 I was the Chief Physician Executive of the $300M Correctional Managed Care. In 1999, I was honored to receive the Nicholas and Katherine Leone Award for Administrative Excellence, The University of Texas Medical Branch’s highest administrative award and the Texas Inmate Family Association Angel Award of 2000. At the University of Missouri-Columbia, the faculty of orthopaedic surgery increased from three to 23, while revenue increased six-fold with a similar dramatic increase in research publications and grants. At The Ohio State University the faculty more than doubled from 17 to 42 with an eight-fold increase in publications and grant funding and a $10 Million increase in the OSU Health Care contribution margin.

Musculoskeletal Infections – My interest in surgical infections began with Hiram C. Polk, Chairman of Surgery Department, University of Louisville in 1977. My interest in Orthopaedics began with Dr. E. Burke Evans who had established a unique, multidisciplinary Osteomyelitis Clinic at the University of Texas Medical Branch continuing Dr. G. W. N. Eggers’ interest in Musculoskeletal Infections. As Co-Director of the Osteomyelitis Clinic in 1986 with Dr. Jon Mader, it developed an international reputation and referral base. Research, publications, and presentations in this area have been in classification systems, non-surgical treatment, surgical technique, antibiotic beads, Ilizarov Technique, biodegradables and antibiotics for musculoskeletal infections. I am a founding member and past president of the Musculoskeletal Infection Society. I was Chairman of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Infection Committee. Most of my $4M grant funding is in Musculoskeletal Infection and I was recently awarded a $1.6 million grant by US Department of Defense for the evaluation and treatment of drug resistant bacteria in a war extremity wound model.

Foot and Ankle Surgery - In 1986, Dr. E. Burke Evans and I started the Foot and Ankle Clinic after my mini-fellowships at the Mayo and Cleveland Clinics. In 1991, we started the E. Burke Evans Foot and Ankle Fellowship and have graduated 18 fellows. Saul Trevino continued the Foot and Ankle Fellowship, graduated six more fellows and recently joined our faculty at Columbia Missouri. Research and publications have been active in this area. I am a member of the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society.

Orthopedic Biomechanics - I completed my Masters of Engineering at the Speed Scientific School, Lousville, Kentucky in 1976. After designing computers for IBM, I entered medical school and I have continued my interests in engineering and computers with research and presentations in Biomechanics and computer-aided instruction.

Ilizarov Surgery - In 1988, I was trained by the renowned soviet orthopaedist G. A. Ilizarov in the Ilizarov technique. I have researched, developed, published, and internationally presented my additions to the Ilizarov Technique for burned children and musculoskeletal deformities. I am past president of the North American Association to Study the Applications and Methods of Ilizarov.
