Dear Alumni:
Thanks for visiting the Department of Orthopaedics Web site! I wanted to take this opportunity to share with you some of the Department’s accomplishments and goals for 2012. I am very proud of the Department for receiving the Patient Satisfaction Achievement Award for 2011. Our patient satisfaction score was 91% exceeding our target for 2011. This score placed us at the 81st percentile in a ranking of our surgical peers in the nation. This ranking was the highest of any department in the OSU Medical Center.
The department continues to grow, and this is an exciting time for us. Our orthopaedic faculty has increased to 44 from 17, and our residency program is now at full complement of 36. We continue to be ranked highly in U.S. News and World Report. The Department of Orthopaedics launched a Hip Preservation Division led by Thomas Ellis, MD specializing in hip arthroscopy, joint preservation, and cartilage restoration. Only about six orthopaedic divisions dedicated to hip preservation exist in the world. We are continuing our efforts to recruit additional faculty in many of the disciplines and look forward to working with you over the next year.
We appreciate your support and contributions at our Residency Conferences and Journal Clubs. The Department will hold its 4th OSU Orthopaedics Alumni CME Program in conjunction with the College of Medicine Reunion Weekend October 5-7, 2012. It will coincide with Homecoming and the Nebraska game. A limited number of football tickets will be available for purchase for those attending the program. We are all looking forward to a new football season under Coach Urban Meyer. Please check back as our visiting professor and topics are still in the planning stages.
Research is a vital part of the educational process for our residents and funding for educational efforts is an increasing challenge. Our orthopaedic faculty members have been vigorously active in research, with a noteworthy increase of four times the papers published only two years ago. In 2009 we had 33 publications with six resident co-authors. In 2011 we had 132 publications, 43 of which were co-authored by residents.
The Department’s vision is for us to become one of the Top Five orthopaedic departments in the United States. Our goals for next year will focus on increasing research funding and publications, as well as establishing an endowment development plan. If you attended our Alumni Association Reception at AAOS, you already know that we have established the John B. Roberts, M.D. Endowed Fellowship Fund. Our vision is that the proceeds from this fund will support the residents’ research rotation. We hope that all current and past residents, colleagues, and staff members who have worked with him over the years will join us in acknowledging Dr. Roberts’ dedication to orthopaedics and to the training of orthopaedic residents at Ohio State by contributing to the Fellowship Fund #482262.
