Medical Center Named Most Wired
For the fifth consecutive year, The Ohio State University Medical Center has been named one of the country’s “Most Wired Hospitals.” The prestigious designation refers to the Medical Center’s inventive use of wireless and Internet technologies to connect with patients, physicians, nurses, payors, health plans and vendors. Studies show institutions utilizing advanced information technology systems see greater operational efficiencies and improved patient care and safety. The list of the top 100 Most Wired Hospitals is compiled annually by Hospitals & Health Networks, the journal of the American Hospital Association. Fewer than 30 hospitals have made the list five or more times in its six-year existence. The only other Ohio hospital to make the 2004 list of top 100 hospitals is Promedica Health System in Toledo.

OSU Radweb/PACS
OSUMC implemented a fully digital, filmless radiology system in March 2001. Since that time films have not bee routinely printed but are available online. All images are available online back to April 2000. This paperless system creates real-time access to testing results. Radiology performs about 300,000 exams per year and the PACS system handles about 1100 exams a day. Access is available from any hospital PC, approximately 5,000 (including the OR). Clinical review stations are also located in the ED and ICU's. Individual access to Medical Records and Imaging systems utilizing VPN technology, letting you work at home. This mature PACS environment is dedicated to setting the industry standard for filmless technology.

Computerized Physician Order Entry
OSUMC began developing its computerized physician order entry (CPOE) system in the mid 1990’s. The system has been live at University Hospital and the James Cancer Hospital since 2000 and will expand to University Hospital East in spring 2005. This comprehensive system includes all inpatient orders on the units where implemented including Laboratory, Radiology, Medications, and Nursing Orders. The system processes approximately 37,000 orders per week and has been central to our efforts at improving our turnaround times for medication administration, CAB tests and Radiology tests. The system also allows you to enter orders on any patient on your service from any location at the Medical Center.

Physician Digital Assistant Program
Beginning in July 2001, each new housestaff member received a PDA (most recently a Palm Tungsten T3) to use in their training program. Each PDA comes pre-loaded with ePocrates Pharmacy Database software and eRounds software that allows you to download your patients’ medical information to the PDA directly from eResults, as well as Avantgo software.

e-Results
This is the third generation of results reporting software that has been implemented since the early 1990’s. The current system is completely web-based and allows easy access to both inpatient and outpatient medical records including all lab reports, radiology reports, all dictated reports, and discharge instructions.
